Metal Slug Advance
About the Game
Metal Slug Advance is a Game Boy Advance run-and-gun game developed by Noise Factory and published by SNK Playmore. It is not a port of an earlier arcade release. Instead, it offers a completely original adventure that was designed specifically for Nintendo's handheld system. You control Walter Ryan or Tyra Elson as you fight through enemy territory, rescue prisoners, collect hidden cards, and defeat powerful military machines.
The health bar, collectible card system, and original stages give it a different rhythm without losing the identity that made the series popular.
๐๏ธ An Original Metal Slug Adventure for Game Boy Advance
Most Metal Slug games on handheld systems are based on arcade releases. Metal Slug Advance takes a different path. Every stage, mission, and collectible was created for the Game Boy Advance. You travel through five military-themed stages that include:
- Enemy bases
- Desert battlefields
- Industrial facilities
- Hidden routes
- Giant boss encounters
Each mission rewards careful exploration because many secrets remain hidden during your first playthrough.
๐ซ Combat That Rewards Skill
Combat follows the classic Metal Slug formula that fans know well. You can:
- Fire your standard handgun without limits
- Pick up powerful temporary weapons
- Throw grenades
- Jump over enemy attacks
- Enter Slug vehicles
- Rescue prisoners for rewards
Your weapon inventory changes constantly throughout each stage. Heavy Machine Gun, Shotgun, Flame Shot, Rocket Launcher, Laser Gun, and Enemy Chaser all return as temporary pickups.
โค๏ธ A Health System That Changes the Experience
One major difference separates Metal Slug Advance from many earlier entries. Instead of losing a life after one hit, your character has a health bar. This system gives you:
- More room to recover from mistakes
- Longer boss battles
- Better balance for portable gaming
- More opportunities to search for hidden collectibles
The game still requires careful movement because enemies attack from multiple directions.
๐ Collect Hidden Cards
The collectible card system is one of the biggest reasons many fans revisit Metal Slug Advance. You can discover 100 collectible cards during your adventure. These cards unlock various bonuses that include:
- Weapon upgrades
- Character improvements
- Special abilities
- Extra content
Many cards stay hidden behind secret paths or special requirements, so replaying stages becomes worthwhile.
๐ Slug Vehicles Return
No Metal Slug game would be complete without its famous vehicles. During your missions you can pilot several Slug machines that offer stronger attacks and better protection. Some examples include:
- Metal Slug Tank
- Slug Flyer
- Slug Gunner
Each vehicle changes how you approach enemy formations and boss fights.
๐ฅ Huge Boss Battles
Every stage ends with a large military machine. Bosses include:
- Giant tanks
- Heavy helicopters
- Massive artillery weapons
- Experimental combat machines
Each boss has unique attack patterns. Learning those patterns makes every battle easier during later attempts.
๐จ Pixel Art That Still Looks Great
Metal Slug has always been known for detailed sprite artwork, and Metal Slug Advance continues that tradition. Highlights include:
- Hand-drawn character sprites
- Smooth animations
- Large explosions
- Humorous enemy reactions
- Detailed military environments
The Game Boy Advance hardware has limitations compared to the Neo Geo arcade system, but the developers preserved the series' visual style remarkably well.
๐ต Music and Sound
The soundtrack keeps the military action atmosphere alive throughout every mission. You will hear:
- Familiar weapon effects
- Explosions
- Character voices
- Energetic background music
The audio quality matches what many Game Boy Advance games offered during that generation.
