History of Sonic the Hedgehog Games

Sonic the Hedgehog is a Japanese video game series and media franchise created and owned by Sega. The series has since expanded to include films, television series, comics, toys, and other merchandise. The franchise centers on the eponymous protagonist, who runs through 2D platforms with obstacles placed in his way by Dr. Robotnik. As a long-time fan of the original 16-bit Genesis platforming games released in North America during the 1990s, he attempted to steal from Eggman (who was also known as Dr. Robotnik in those games) and do evil in general. While having small success – until he was captured by the series’ antagonists Shadow (whom recently become a friend of Sonic’s) and imprisoned in their base that could only be unlocked by him pulling an all-metal pocket watch key out of his stomach tail.

The original game, released in 1991, stars the blue hedgehog named Sonic and his rivals Mario and Tails, who has to race through multiple stages while collecting rings.

Sonic the Hedgehog is a long running franchise that has enjoyed great success in video games, comics and TV shows.

The “Sonic the Hedgehog” video game series has been created by Japanese video game developer Sega, and has been published on a variety of home consoles and handhelds since 1991. In all, these games have sold over 115 million copies worldwide as of 2010. As of January 2013, it is one of the best-selling video game franchises.

The Character – Sonic The Hedgehog

Sonic the Hedgehog is one of the most iconic video game characters of all time. Sonic’s powerful legs give him super speed and his enemies feel his foot rushes across the ground. Sonic was a speedy blue hedgehog born from a genetic experiment that Professor Gerald Robotnik worked on in order to produce egg-cellent soldiers for him. Like many characters from this game, Sonic utilizes his speed by running full speed along an incline, making it hard to stay up with him as he rushes ahead at incredible speeds.

Sonic the Hedgehog is known for his high speed, ability to spin at phenomenal speeds and the ability to curl into a ball like a spring when he needs to lose some speed, enabling him to roll across surfaces at high speeds as well. In most games in the series, it is his mission to stop Dr. Eggman from taking control of Station Square’s power supply with his evil machines and stealing other people’s life energy.

Genres of Sonic Games

Of the various types of video games in the series, platform games are by far the most common. The franchise also includes racing games, action-adventure games, character- and vehicular combat, role-playing video games, and sports games.

The franchise revolves around the eponymous protagonist, who is a blue anthropomorphic hedgehog who has the ability to run at supersonic speed and curl into a ball in order to roll through the environment. Thus far, 120 titles have been released across numerous gaming platforms. The vast majority of these are side-scrolling games, with platformer games being a large component as well.

Sonic the Hedgehog’s games can be roughly divided into three categories: sports games, racing games and platform games. The former two types have the main character in a racing vehicle (such as the “Sonic R”, “Sonic Drift” and “Gas Monkey’s Back in Business”). The latter type has him jumping through platforms while using his speediness to navigate.
