Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga is a role-playing game released for the Game Boy Advance in 2003. Developed by AlphaDream and published by Nintendo, it is the first game in the Mario & Luigi series. Unlike traditional Mario platformers, this adventure focuses on turn-based battles, exploration, puzzles, and cooperation between Mario and Luigi.
๐ Princess Peach Loses Her Voice
The story begins when a visitor from the Beanbean Kingdom arrives at Princess Peach's castle.
The visitor is actually Cackletta, a villain who steals Princess Peach's voice and replaces it with explosive speech. To restore Peach's voice, Mario and Luigi travel beyond the Mushroom Kingdom and journey into the Beanbean Kingdom.
During the adventure, you meet several important characters:
- Mario
- Luigi
- Princess Peach
- Bowser
- Cackletta
- Fawful
- Prince Peasley
The story contains a large amount of dialogue and humor, which became one of the series' defining traits.
๐ Explore the Beanbean Kingdom
Most Mario games take place primarily within the Mushroom Kingdom. Superstar Saga takes a different approach.
The adventure unfolds across the Beanbean Kingdom, where you visit locations such as:
- Beanbean Castle Town
- Stardust Fields
- Hoohoo Mountain
- Teehee Valley
- Joke's End
Each area contains puzzles, enemies, and story events that help progress the adventure.
โ๏ธ Turn-Based Battles With Action Commands
Combat uses a turn-based RPG system, but timing plays an important role.
Mario and Luigi each have their own buttons during battle:
- Mario uses the A Button.
- Luigi uses the B Button.
Correct timing can:
- Increase attack damage
- Dodge enemy attacks
- Counterattack opponents
This system keeps battles active instead of relying solely on menu selections.
๐จ Bros. Moves and Special Techniques
Throughout the game, Mario and Luigi learn new abilities that help both in battle and exploration.
Examples include:
- High Jump
- Spin Jump
- Bros. Attacks
- Hammer techniques
Many puzzles require both brothers to work together to reach new areas.
โญ Level Up and Customize Your Stats
After winning battles, you earn experience points.
Leveling up improves:
- HP
- Power
- Defense
- Speed
- Stache
The Stache stat is unique to the Mario & Luigi series and influences certain gameplay elements, including lucky events and item-related outcomes.
๐ญ Fawful's First Appearance
One of the most memorable characters in the game is Fawful.
He serves as Cackletta's assistant and frequently appears throughout the story. His unusual dialogue and personality helped make him one of the most popular villains in the Mario RPG series.
