Sonic 6
About the Game
Sonic 6 is an unlicensed Game Boy platform game that uses Sonic the Hedgehog as its main character. Despite the title, this is not an official Sega release. The game is actually a modified version of Speedy Gonzales for the Game Boy, with Sonic graphics replacing many of the original character sprites and visual elements. The pirate release reportedly appeared around 1998 and became one of the more well-known Sonic bootleg games.
๐ฆ A Curious Piece of Sonic History
If you start this game expecting a traditional Sonic adventure, you will quickly notice something unusual. The gameplay structure comes from Sunsoft's Speedy Gonzales, not from an official Sonic title.
The creators replaced:
- Speedy Gonzales with Sonic
- Various character graphics
- Menu artwork
- Several visual references throughout the game
However, the core level design and gameplay mechanics remain largely based on the original Speedy Gonzales Game Boy release.
๐ฎ What You Do During Gameplay
Your objective is simple. You travel through side-scrolling stages while avoiding hazards and enemies.
Throughout the adventure you will:
- Run through platforming stages
- Jump across gaps
- Use springs and ramps
- Collect items
- Reach the end of each level
- Progress through multiple themed zones
The game includes several areas such as Forest Zone, Ice Zone, Desert Zone, Country Zone, Mexico Zone, and Cheese Island Zone. These names differ slightly from the original Speedy Gonzales release due to modifications made in the hack.
๐ Why Was Speedy Gonzales Chosen?
This is one of the most interesting aspects of Sonic 6.
The original Speedy Gonzales game already contained elements that resemble classic Sonic gameplay:
| Feature | Present in Sonic 6 |
|---|---|
| Side-scrolling platforming | Yes |
| Springs | Yes |
| High-speed sections | Yes |
| Loop-style structures | Yes |
| Multiple themed zones | Yes |
Because of these similarities, the game worked reasonably well as a Sonic-themed conversion.
๐ผ๏ธ Graphics and Presentation
Many Sonic graphics were borrowed from existing Sonic games.
Research from Sonic preservation communities notes that:
- Sonic's main sprites were adapted from Sonic the Hedgehog 3
- Some artwork comes from Sonic 3D Blast
- Various menu and ending graphics were modified specifically for this bootleg release
These changes create the appearance of a Sonic game even though the underlying game engine comes from Speedy Gonzales.
โ ๏ธ Technical Oddities
This unofficial release contains a few known issues.
One documented problem affects Country Zone, where graphical corruption may appear during normal progression. Community research has shown that resetting the game or entering a password for the stage can avoid the issue.
