Yoshi in Sonic 2
About the Game
Yoshi in Sonic 2 is a fan-made hack of the popular game Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for the Sega Genesis. In this game, the player controls Yoshi, the iconic dinosaur from the Super Mario franchise, instead of Sonic. The game features the same level design and mechanics as the original Sonic 2, but with a few modifications to accommodate Yoshi's abilities, such as flutter jumps and the ability to throw eggs. The game also features different graphics and music to fit the theme of Yoshi. Overall, this is a fun and unique take on the classic Sonic 2 gameplay, combining elements from both the Mario and Sonic universes.
🦖 Yoshi Takes Sonic's Place
The most noticeable change appears as soon as the game begins.
Instead of controlling Sonic the Hedgehog, you control Yoshi throughout the adventure.
Yoshi replaces Sonic's character sprite while moving through the same world originally designed for Sonic 2. The result is an unusual crossover between two of gaming's most recognizable franchises.
🌴 The Sonic 2 Adventure Remains
The hack follows the original Sonic the Hedgehog 2 structure.
You still travel through familiar zones such as:
- Emerald Hill Zone
- Chemical Plant Zone
- Aquatic Ruin Zone
- Casino Night Zone
- Hill Top Zone
- Mystic Cave Zone
- Oil Ocean Zone
- Metropolis Zone
- Sky Chase Zone
- Wing Fortress Zone
Dr. Robotnik remains the main villain, and the overall progression follows Sonic 2.
⚡ Classic Sonic Mechanics
Although Yoshi is the playable character, the gameplay mechanics remain based on Sonic the Hedgehog 2.
You can still:
- Run through stages
- Collect rings
- Use Spin Dash
- Defeat Badniks
- Reach checkpoints
- Battle Robotnik's machines
The hack focuses on replacing the playable character rather than redesigning the game's core mechanics.
🎨 A Nintendo Character in a SEGA World
One reason the project gained attention among gameing fans is the unusual crossover concept.
The game places a character associated with Super Mario and Nintendo into environments originally built for Sonic.
This creates a different visual experience while preserving the original Sonic 2 gameplay systems.

🏃 A Different Way to Revisit Sonic 2
If you already know Sonic the Hedgehog 2, the stage layouts and objectives will look familiar.
The main difference comes from seeing Yoshi perform actions normally associated with Sonic, including:
- High-speed movement
- Loop traversal
- Spin attacks
- Platforming sequences
The contrast between character and game world is what makes the hack memorable.
