Zelda II: The Adventure of Mario
About the Game
Zelda II: The Adventure of Mario is an action-adventure game that follows Mario across the land of Hyrule. It uses side-scrolling combat, an overhead world map, palace exploration, magic abilities, and character progression. Mario uses familiar jumping and movement physics as he travels through towns, caves, dangerous routes, and enemy-filled palaces.
๐บ๏ธ Explore Hyrule with Mario
The adventure takes place across a large version of Hyrule. The overworld map connects different areas, including towns, mountains, caves, and palaces. Some routes remain blocked until Mario finds the right item or ability.
The journey includes several palace locations:
- Parapa Palace
- Midoro Palace
- Island Palace
- Maze Island Palace
- Palace on the Sea
- Three-Eye Rock Palace
- Great Palace
Each palace has enemies, locked doors, and items to find. Keys are important for reaching new rooms and progressing through these areas.
๐ฅ Mario's Movement and Combat
Mario uses movement and jumping physics based on his classic side-scrolling adventures. Combat requires careful jumps and good timing. Enemies such as Iron Knuckles and Stalfos appear throughout Hyrule.
Mario's size also matters during the adventure. Damage can reduce Super Mario to his smaller form. Certain routes and actions depend on his current size and available abilities.
The game also includes upward and downward attack techniques. These moves help Mario deal with enemies above or below him.

โจ Magic and Special Abilities
Magic plays an important role in palace exploration and combat. Mario can learn different abilities as the adventure progresses.
Some documented abilities include:
- Shield: Creates a protective shield around Mario.
- Tanooki: Gives Mario a tail that slows his descent and supports a low attack.
- Fire: Provides a fire-based attack.
- Life: Restores health through magic.
The Tanooki ability takes the place of the traditional high-jump spell. It does not give Mario the ability to fly. Tanooki and Fire powers remain available between scenes until Mario loses his Super form.
๐ Improve Mario's Strength
The adventure uses an experience and level system. Mario can improve three main attributes:
- Attack: Increases offensive strength.
- Magic: Improves magic progression.
- Life: Improves health progression.
The level system reaches level 8. Experience points play an important role in character development, so defeating enemies and collecting experience can support progress through later areas.
๐ Enemies and Palace Bosses
Hyrule contains several enemy types from the adventure's side-scrolling sections. Iron Knuckles and Stalfos require attention to attack timing and positioning.
Palace boss encounters include:
- Horsehead
- Helmethead
- Rebonack
- Carock
- Gooma
- Barba
