About the Game

Pokémon Ambrosia is a Pokémon Crystal ROM hack that keeps the classic Game Boy Color foundation while changing the Pokédex, story, battle system, exploration, trainer teams, and post-game content. You can use Pokémon from the first six generations, encounter Pokémon directly in the overworld, travel to areas much earlier than in the original Crystal, and build teams around custom abilities and modern battle mechanics.

🌍 A Different Take on Pokémon Crystal

Pokémon Ambrosia uses the Crystal engine as its base, but the content differs heavily from the original game. You can explore several areas much earlier than expected. Blackthorn and Olivine are accessible from the start, while Kanto becomes available after you reach Goldenrod. Some early areas contain Pokémon and trainers far above your current level, so exploration requires care. Hidden rewards can also make these risky areas worth visiting.

Two level caps control this open progression:

Training Level Cap: The highest level your Pokémon can reach through training.
Capture Level Cap: The highest-level Pokémon you can catch.
Both caps appear on your Trainer Card.
Gym victories raise the caps.
The starting training cap is 20.
The capture cap is generally about 10 levels below the training cap.

This system keeps early exploration from turning into unrestricted grinding.

🐾 Pokémon Can Wander Around the World

Wild Pokémon do not always stay hidden in random encounters. Pokémon Ambrosia places wild Pokémon directly in the overworld. You can see them before you interact with them, which changes how you approach routes and other areas.

There are three main overworld encounter types:

Normal Pokémon: Standard overworld encounters at suitable levels.
Aggressive Pokémon: Red Pokémon that attack you when you get close. A Pokédoll is required to escape from them.
Shiny Pokémon: Gold overworld Pokémon with a generally high spawn rate of about 1/8 in applicable areas.

⚔️ Battles Use Modern Pokémon Mechanics

The battle system goes well beyond the mechanics of the original Crystal.

The Pokédex contains 253 Pokémon from Generations 1 through 6, and every Pokémon has at least one ability. Some use familiar abilities, while others receive different or custom effects. For example, the official documentation lists Tyranitar with Sand Stream, Lucario with Intrepid Sword, and Gardevoir with an ability that raises Light Screen when it switches in.

The game also uses a physical/special split and provides many moves and held items associated with later Pokémon battle systems. Some available moves include:

🛠️ Quality-of-Life Features Save Time

Pokémon Ambrosia removes several inconveniences from classic Pokémon games. Useful features include:

B is turbo by default.
Battle Speed can remove most battle text.
Battle information can show enemy stats, moves, and field effects.
Select can show an enemy's type during battle.
You can forfeit almost any battle through the Run option.
Exp Share becomes available very early.
The endgame can upgrade Exp Share to provide 200% experience to non-participating Pokémon.
Sport Shoes provide automatic running outdoors.
RemembrAll works as a free portable move relearner.
TMs are reusable.
Pokémon can use compatible HM field moves without keeping those HMs in their movesets.
Pocket PC provides remote PC access outside caves and dungeons.
Pocket PC can also function as a portable Pokémon Center.
Escape Pod works as a reusable Escape Rope.
Repulsor works as a reusable Repel.
Warp Device provides instant travel to important locations.

These systems reduce routine menu work and make team management easier.

🧭 What You Should Know Before Starting

A few things are worth remembering before you begin your first run.

Check the level caps on your Trainer Card.
Do not assume every early route contains Pokémon at your current level.
Red overworld Pokémon are aggressive and can be dangerous.
Carry Pokédolls if you plan to explore areas with aggressive encounters.
Pay attention to enemy abilities and held items.
Use the game's reusable TMs to experiment with different movesets.
Take advantage of the Pocket PC and RemembrAll when building new teams.
Avoid treating the level cap as a simple grinding restriction. It is part of the game's progression system.
