Pokemon Korosu
About the Game
Pokémon Korosu is a Game Boy Advance game based on Pokémon FireRed, created by Crizzle (Chris Rose). The game uses a darker story about revenge and takes place across the Sevii Islands and Kanto. It also changes several FireRed mechanics, adds a small selection of Pokémon from Generations 4–6, introduces a physical/special/status move split, and replaces the traditional Pokémon League with a 64-trainer tournament.
🔥 A Different Kind of FireRed Adventure
Pokémon Korosu changes the structure and tone of the original FireRed adventure.
Key differences include:
- A completely new story.
- New characters and events.
- A revenge-focused storyline.
- Sevii Islands as the initial setting.
- A modified version of Kanto later in the game.
- A 64-trainer Pokémon Tournament.
- A physical/special/status move split.
- A modified Repel system.
- Selected Generation 4–6 Pokémon.
- Changed evolution methods.
- No fishing.
- Running is available from the beginning.
⚠️ A Darker Pokémon Story
The game's story contains themes that are very different from the official Pokémon series.
The creator describes the main story as follows:
- You play as a young woman.
- Her family is killed.
- A mafia-like criminal group kidnaps her.
- She is forced into slavery.
- She eventually escapes.
- Her main goal becomes revenge against the people responsible.
The creator says the first part of the story was partially inspired by Kill Bill.
The game contains:
- Violence.
- Death.
- Profanity.
- Criminal organizations.
- Mature themes.
The creator himself warns that the game is extremely dark and violent compared with his earlier work.
🏝️ Your Journey Starts in the Sevii Islands
Pokémon Korosu does not begin with the traditional Kanto adventure.
The first part of the game takes place in the Sevii Islands.
The islands have been substantially changed from their normal FireRed presentation:
- Criminal groups control different islands.
- The islands are described as unstable.
- Different criminal groups have different levels of strength.
- Several locations have been modified for the new story.
This makes the Sevii Islands the main setting for the first portion of the adventure.
🌆 Kanto Has Changed Too
The story later moves to Kanto.
This is not the same Kanto from the original FireRed storyline.
According to the creator:
- Kanto has been affected by events from Pokémon Outlaw.
- The region is in a grim condition.
- Several aspects of the original Kanto setting have changed.
- The second part of the story connects more closely with the events of Pokémon Outlaw.
Pokémon Korosu therefore exists within the same fictional universe as Pokémon Outlaw.
🔗 Connection With Pokémon Outlaw
Pokémon Korosu shares its universe with Pokémon Outlaw, another FireRed game by Crizzle.
The creator describes Korosu as something that could be considered a sequel to Outlaw.
You do not need to play Pokémon Outlaw to understand Korosu's main story, but Korosu refers to events from that earlier game.
⚔️ A New Battle System
Pokémon Korosu changes the battle mechanics from the original FireRed system.
The game implements a:
- Physical move category
- Special move category
- Status move category
This is different from the original Generation III system, where the physical or special classification depended on the move's type.
The change affects how you select moves and build your Pokémon's movesets.
🐾 Selected Pokémon From Later Generations
The original FireRed Pokédex is expanded with a small selection of Pokémon from later generations.
The creator specifically lists:
- Shinx
- Luxio
- Luxray
- Leafeon
- Glaceon
- Roserade
- Weavile
- Gallade
- Lucario
- Several additional Pokémon that were intentionally kept as discoveries.
The game still contains mostly Generation 1–3 Pokémon. The later-generation additions form a relatively small part of the roster.
🧬 Changed Evolution Methods
Some Pokémon have different evolution requirements.
Documented examples include:
- Leafeon: Leaf Stone.
- Glaceon: Ice Stone.
- Roserade: Leaf Stone.
- Weavile: Ice Stone.
- Gallade: Moon Stone used on a Kirlia before it reaches the normal Gardevoir evolution level.
The hack also changes some trade evolutions.
According to the creator:
- Some trade evolutions use a Moon Stone.
- Some use a Water Stone.
🏆 The Pokémon Tournament Replaces the League
One of Pokémon Korosu's biggest structural changes comes at the end of the main progression.
The traditional Elite Four/Pokémon League format is replaced by a 64-trainer Pokémon Tournament.
The tournament was inspired by American college basketball's tournament format.
The creator specifically cites the March Madness tournament as inspiration.
This changes the final competitive section of the game from the conventional Pokémon League structure.
🎯 Trainer Battles Work Differently
The trainer interaction system also receives a small but noticeable change.
In the original FireRed-style system, a trainer can automatically turn toward you when the game triggers a trainer battle.
Korosu changes this behavior.
- If a trainer challenges you, your character faces that trainer.
- The creator specifically implemented this change to make the interaction more logical.
🏃 Running Starts Immediately
You do not need to obtain the Running Shoes before running.
The game gives you running ability from the beginning.
You can also:
- Run outdoors.
- Run indoors.
This is specifically listed as one of the quality-of-life changes in the creator's feature list.
🎒 A Different Repel System
Pokémon Korosu uses a Black 2/White 2-style Repel system.
After a Repel expires, the game can ask if you want to use another Repel.
The option appears when:
- Your current Repel has ended.
- You have another Repel of the same type available.
This removes the need to repeatedly open the Bag just to activate another Repel.
🎣 There Is No Fishing
Pokémon Korosu removes fishing from the game.
The creator explicitly lists:
- No fishing.
This was a development decision because the creator did not want to create the required fishing overworld sprites.
💀 Your Character Can Kill NPCs
One of the most unusual mechanics is the ability to kill certain characters.
The creator specifically states that:
- The main character kills people during the story.
- Some trainers/NPCs can be killed.
- This is part of the mature storyline rather than a standard Pokémon mechanic.
A guide describing the feature states that some trainer encounters give you an option to kill the trainer.
This is one of the major reasons Korosu differs so sharply from official Pokémon games.
📈 Difficulty Can Increase Sharply
The creator warns that Pokémon Korosu can become difficult at several points.
The warning specifically highlights:
- The beginning of the game.
- Situations where your character is placed in a difficult position.
- Later battles that can require preparation.
Community players have also reported difficulty with the game's level curve, particularly during parts of the adventure and tournament. These are player observations rather than official difficulty specifications.
