Sonic Battle Retranslated SHC2025
About the Game
Sonic Battle Retranslated SHC2025 is a Game Boy Advance action fighting game with a revised English script based on the Japanese text of Sonic Battle. The SHC2025 edition covers all eight Story Mode episodes, Professor Gerald's eight diary entries, skill names and descriptions, location names, save-screen locations, and the โSkill Capturedโ screen text. Separate versions exist for the USA, Japan, and Europe releases.
The underlying game centers on arena combat, story progression, and Emerl's ability to learn skills from other characters. The SHC2025 edition keeps its focus on the written presentation of that experience. It does not advertise new battle modes, new characters, or new stages.
๐ A More Detailed Look at the Story
The story is divided into eight episodes. Emerl is at the center of the narrative, and the story explores his abilities, relationships with the cast, and mystery surrounding the Gizoid.
The SHC2025 edition revises the English dialogue throughout all eight episodes. It also covers all eight Professor Gerald diary entries. This makes the revised text relevant to both the main story and its additional background material.
The project description specifically states that the new translation is based on the Japanese script and aims to better reflect the intended meaning of the story.
โ๏ธ How the Arena Battles Work
The underlying Sonic Battle combat takes place in arena-style environments. Your character can move in eight directions, jump, attack, guard, use special attacks, dash, and pursue an opponent after certain attacks.
The basic battle commands are:
- D-Pad: Move your character.
- A: Jump.
- B: Basic attack.
- R: Use a selected special attack.
- L: Guard.
- Hold L: Recover health.
- Double-tap a direction: Dash.
- B + direction: Perform directional heavy or upper attacks.
- B while airborne: Air attack.
- R while airborne: Air special.
- Direction after knocking an opponent away: Pursuit.
- B after a pursuit: Pursuit attack.
This control system gives the battles more movement than a conventional side-to-side fighter. You can attack from the ground or air and use movement to follow an opponent after a knockback.
๐ค Emerl's Skill System
Emerl has one of the game's most important mechanics. He can capture skills from other characters and use them as part of his own configuration.
Skill types affect areas such as:
- Ground attacks
- Air attacks
- Special attacks
- Guard abilities
- Healing
- Movement
- Jumping
- Dashing
The SHC2025 edition also revises the names and descriptions of these skills. That matters because the skill system is closely tied to both combat and Emerl's progression.
๐ง Why the Retranslated Text Matters
The main difference in this edition is the written content.
The official SHC2025 entry identifies problems in the previous English localization, including translation inaccuracies, awkward wording, typos, and changes to the tone or intent of some dialogue. The new English text was created from the Japanese script by translator Windii Gaylord.
The coverage is wider than normal dialogue alone. You also get revised:
- Skill names
- Skill descriptions
- Professor Gerald's diary entries
- Overworld location names
- Save-screen location names
- Skill Capture screen wording
- Story Mode dialogue across all eight episodes
๐ฎ Game Modes in the Underlying Game
The underlying Sonic Battle contains several ways to play beyond the main story.
Story Mode
Follow the eight-episode narrative and develop Emerl's abilities through battles and progression.
Battle Mode
Set up battles between characters and select the available battle settings.
Challenge Mode
Take one character through a sequence of battles and earn a score and rank.
Training Mode
Practice combat techniques and experiment with different attacks.
The game also contains mini-games and additional battle content.
The SHC2025 project description does not state that these modes have been redesigned, so they should be treated as the existing Sonic Battle content rather than new features of this edition.
๐ Three Regional Versions
One useful detail is the regional coverage.
The SHC2025 entry provides separate versions for:
- USA
- Japan
- Europe
The Japanese version has an additional text consideration. Certain Japanese text graphics use their US counterparts for consistency. The project page gives examples involving menu and location wording.
