Pokemon Brutal Version
About the Game
Pokémon Brutal Version is a Pokémon Ruby GBA ROM hack created by Gerokunz. The project keeps much of the original Hoenn adventure but changes several parts of the journey with new characters, extra events, selected Kanto and Johto Pokémon, and a higher difficulty level. The documented release is complete, with the project dating back to 2012 and a later update listed as January 24, 2018.
🎮 Pokémon Ruby With Several Surprises
If you know the original Pokémon Ruby, the basic structure will be familiar. You still explore Hoenn, catch Pokémon, train your team, visit towns, fight Gym Leaders, and progress through the main adventure. The difference comes from the extra content. The documented features include:
- New characters
- New title screen
- Additional events
- Selected Kanto Pokémon
- Selected Johto Pokémon
- Increased difficulty
📖 The Main Ruby Adventure Remains
Pokémon Brutal Version does not replace the entire Hoenn story. The available documentation describes it as a Ruby hack with additional events and characters.
You therefore still get the familiar Hoenn framework. The extra content changes parts of the journey without turning the game into a completely separate Pokémon story. This is useful if you want something recognizable but do not want to replay standard Ruby exactly as it was.
🧩 Extra Events Are Central to the Hack
The developer's original description specifically mentions added events, including the Daniel Event. These events are more important than large-scale mechanical changes. You can encounter situations that were not present in the original Ruby campaign. The Petalburg Woods sequence shown in the old gameplay footage is one documented example.
🕹️ Familiar Pokémon Mechanics Remain
Because the hack is based on Pokémon Ruby, the main gameplay structure remains recognizable. You can:
- Catch wild Pokémon
- Build a six-Pokémon team
- Train and evolve your Pokémon
- Learn new moves
- Collect items
- Explore Hoenn
- Visit Pokémon Centers
- Battle Gym Leaders
- Progress through the Ruby-based campaign
The surviving documentation does not indicate a complete replacement of these systems. That makes the hack easier to understand if you already know Generation III Pokémon.
