About the Game

Pokémon Scorched Silver is a Game Boy Advance game based on Pokémon Emerald and created by Sloo. It is a sequel to Pokémon Gold and Silver rather than a remake. The story takes place 20 years after the events of Gold and Silver and follows a new Pokémon Trainer from Cherrygrove City.

The completed v1.3 version contains eight Gym Badges, a full main adventure and post-game content.

🌄 Johto 20 Years Later

The game revisits the Johto region after a two-decade time gap.

The story includes:

A new protagonist from Cherrygrove City.
A new storyline rather than a remake of Gold and Silver.
Familiar characters from the earlier Johto games.
New characters.
A changed Johto region.
New locations and events.
A new antagonist group called Team Phoenix.

The original Gold and Silver events are part of the game's history. You do not simply replay Ethan or Kris's original journey.

🔥 Team Phoenix and Celebi

Team Phoenix is the main antagonist group in the story.

Their objective centers on Celebi.

The documented storyline states that:

Team Phoenix is operating throughout Johto.
The group is interested in capturing Celebi.
Their plan becomes connected to the game's main storyline.
You encounter Team Phoenix members during the adventure.

Celebi also has documented encounter locations in the completed game. The Scorched Silver Wiki lists Celebi as an encounter in Ilex Forest or Kizu Forest.

🏙️ Cherrygrove City Starts Your Adventure

Your adventure begins in Cherrygrove City, rather than New Bark Town.

The documented setup has you:

Start as a new Trainer.
Begin your journey from Cherrygrove City.
Travel through Johto.
Meet familiar and new characters.
Work toward becoming a Pokémon Master.

The starting location is one of the differences from the original Gold and Silver games.

🐾 Pokémon From Generations 1–8

Scorched Silver greatly expands the Pokémon roster compared with the original Emerald release.

The documented feature list includes Pokémon from:

Generation 1
Generation 2
Generation 3
Generation 4
Generation 5
Generation 6
Generation 7
Generation 8

The available roster is reported as 750+ Pokémon.

The game also includes regional forms from later generations.

🌍 Galarian and Hisuian Forms

The expanded Pokémon system includes regional variants.

Documented examples include:

Galarian Pokémon.
Hisuian Pokémon.
Hisuian Voltorb.
Hisuian Zorua.
Galarian Yamask.
Galarian Weezing.
Galarian Mr. Mime.

Version 1.3 specifically changed the evolution method for Mime Jr. so that it evolves into Galarian Mr. Mime using an Ice Stone.

💥 Mega Evolution Comes in the Post-Game

Mega Evolution is available in the post-game rather than as a central mechanic from the beginning.

The v1.3 release also introduces:

New Mega forms for the three Johto starter Pokémon.
Mega Evolution content after the main adventure.

The three Johto starters are:

Chikorita
Cyndaquil
Totodile

Their final evolutionary forms receive new Mega forms in v1.3.

⚔️ Modern Battle Mechanics

Scorched Silver uses mechanics from later Pokémon generations.

The game's documented mechanics include:

Physical/Special split.
Fairy type.
Updated moves.
Updated abilities.
Later-generation Pokémon mechanics.

The game is built with the Pokéemerald Expansion, which provides the technical foundation for these modernized mechanics.

🧚 Fairy Type

The original Pokémon Emerald battle system predates the Fairy type.

Scorched Silver includes Fairy-type mechanics.

This means:

Fairy-type Pokémon are available.
Fairy-type moves are included.
The type system uses the later-generation Fairy type.

⚖️ Physical and Special Moves Are Split

Scorched Silver uses the modern physical/special split.

This differs from the original Pokémon Emerald system, where a move's physical or special classification depended on its type.

The expanded engine provides the later physical/special classification.

🧬 Gen 8 Moves and Abilities

The Pokéemerald Expansion foundation gives the game access to later-generation content.

Documented features include:

Gen 8 moves.
Updated abilities.
Gen 7 movepools.
Later-generation Pokémon.

This allows the GBA game to use mechanics that were not present in the original Emerald release.

🏃 You Can Run Indoors

Scorched Silver changes the movement rules from the original Emerald game.

You can:

Run outdoors.
Run inside buildings.

Indoor running is specifically listed as one of the game's features.

🧗 HM Moves Do Not Need to Be Taught

The game changes the traditional HM system.

You can use certain HM moves outside battle without teaching the move to your Pokémon, provided that the Pokémon is capable of learning that HM move.

This means your Pokémon's movesets do not have to contain every field HM required for exploration.

♾️ Reusable TMs

Version 1.3 specifically introduces reusable TMs.

The v1.3 changelog states:

TMs can be reused.
HMs can be deleted.

This is a version-specific improvement and should not be confused with features from earlier builds.

🧹 Deletable HMs

The v1.3 update also makes HMs deletable.

You can therefore remove an HM move from a Pokémon when it is no longer required.

Combined with the game's field-HM system, this gives you more flexibility when managing your Pokémon's moves.

🧪 Poison Does Not Knock Your Pokémon Out Outside Battle

Scorched Silver changes the behavior of poison outside battles.

A poisoned Pokémon survives with 1 HP rather than fainting from poison while walking outside battle.

This mechanic comes from the game's modernized engine features.

🧴 Black and White-Style Repel System

The game uses a Black/White-style Repel system.

When a Repel runs out, the game can prompt you to use another one rather than requiring you to manually open your Bag every time.

🌿 Nature Changing

Version 1.3 introduces a Nature-changing NPC.

The NPC is:

An old woman.
Located on a park bench in Violet City.
Used to change a Pokémon's Nature.

You can check a Pokémon's current Nature from its summary screen.

🏥 Battle Nurse for Experience

Version 1.3 introduces a Battle Nurse in most Pokémon Centers.

The purpose of this NPC is to provide battles that can be used for gaining experience.

This gives you an additional method for leveling Pokémon.

🥚 More Egg Moves

The v1.3 update expands the Move Relearner.

Some Egg Moves were added to the Move Relearner for all Pokémon.

This gives you another way to obtain certain moves without relying entirely on breeding.

🕐 Start Menu Clock

Version 1.3 adds a clock to the Start menu.

The clock provides an in-game time display as part of the updated interface.

🎒 Larger Bag

The v1.3 update increases the Bag capacity to 120 items.

This change has an important save-file consequence:

Previous-version save files are not compatible with v1.3 because of the Bag expansion.

If you start v1.3, it is therefore important to use a new save rather than carrying over a save from an earlier version.

🦴 Fossils and Key Items

Version 1.3 also includes a fix related to fossils.

The changelog states that:

Fossils were restored to the Key Items section as intended.

🗺️ Updated Johto

The game does not simply copy the original Gold and Silver maps.

Scorched Silver uses a modified Johto setting with:

Updated maps.
New locations.
New events.
New characters.
Additional Pokémon encounters.
Story areas connected to Team Phoenix.

The Scorched Silver Wiki documents locations, Pokémon encounters, item locations and Trainer teams for the v1.3 game.

🏆 Eight Gym Badges

The completed v1.3 version contains the standard eight-Gym progression.

You can:

Travel through Johto.
Challenge Gym Leaders.
Earn eight Gym Badges.
Progress to the Pokémon League.
Continue into post-game content.

⚔️ Gym Battles Require Preparation

The creator specifically describes the game as more difficult than the standard Pokémon games.

Gym Leaders can use:

Held items.
Setup moves.
More strategically built teams.

The developer's advice is to defeat available Trainers before reaching each Gym and use strategy during important battles.

Community players have also discussed the game's level curve and difficulty. Those comments are player opinions, so they should not be treated as official difficulty measurements.
