Pokémon Modern Heart and Soul
About the Game
Pokémon Modern Heart and Soul is a fan-made Game Boy Advance ROM hack based on the Pokémon Heart & Soul project and the Modern Emerald framework. It focuses on the Johto adventure from Pokémon Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold, and SoulSilver while using modern quality-of-life systems from the GBA decompilation scene.
🗺️ Johto Remains the Main Adventure
Your journey starts in Johto, just as you would expect from the classic games. The project draws from both the original Generation II games and the Nintendo DS remakes. The result keeps important story elements from HeartGold and SoulSilver while using the GBA format.
- Johto Gym Leaders
- Team Rocket
- The Kimono Girls
- Eusine
- Legendary Pokémon events
- The Pokémon League
- Kanto's postgame
- Red at Mt. Silver
🏙️ Kanto Gives You a Second Region
The adventure does not end after the Johto Pokémon League. You can continue into Kanto during the postgame. The project follows the HGSS structure for this portion of the adventure.
This gives you a much larger journey than an eight-Gym-only Pokémon game. Kanto also provides access to additional locations, encounters, battles, and the eventual Mt. Silver encounter with Red.
⚔️ Modern Battle Options
Modern Heart and Soul is not designed as a hardcore difficulty hack. The original Heart & Soul project focuses on a traditional Pokémon experience with modern conveniences. Its documentation describes the project as a faithful Johto adventure rather than a difficulty-focused hack.
You can also find modern battle options within the project's framework. Depending on the version, these can include settings related to:
- Physical/Special split
- Fairy type
- Modern Pokémon typings
- Modern move pools
- Ability behavior
- Experience systems
- Challenge modes
🎒 More Convenient Item Management
Modern Emerald provides several changes to inventory management. The documented framework supports:
- Larger item capacity
- Up to 999 copies for many items
- PC storage when the bag reaches capacity
- Reusable Repel prompts
- Reusable TMs when the relevant option is enabled
- Faster field-move interaction
🏆 Gym Battles Follow a More Balanced Curve
Heart & Soul takes inspiration from Pokémon Crystal Legacy for trainer teams and encounter design. The project also includes an improved level curve compared with the original Generation II games.
You therefore get familiar Gym Leaders without the unusually awkward level progression found in the original Johto games. The goal is not to make every Gym battle extremely difficult.
🍓 Berries Replace the Traditional Apricorn System
The project makes an interesting change to the Poké Ball crafting system.
Instead of using Apricorns in the traditional Generation II manner, Berries can be used with Kurt to create special Poké Balls. The ball's catch bonus depends on the Pokémon's type.
This keeps Kurt's crafting role while changing the item system around him.
🦁 Two Safari Zones
The project includes two Safari Zones.
This gives you additional areas for Pokémon encounters and collection goals.
Safari areas also fit naturally into the expanded Johto and Kanto adventure because they give you another reason to explore beyond the main Gym route.
🎵 HeartGold and SoulSilver Music
The project uses music associated with Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver while operating on the GBA framework.
This is an interesting technical combination.
The game retains the visual structure and hardware limitations of a GBA Pokémon title, while its presentation draws from the Nintendo DS Johto remakes.
🧑🤝🧑 The Familiar Johto Cast Returns
You can meet characters associated with the Johto storyline.
The project includes story elements such as the Kimono Girls and Eusine, along with the Team Rocket storyline and Legendary Pokémon events.
The story therefore stays close to the HGSS structure.
You are not dealing with a completely new villain organization or an unrelated region.
🧩 Nuzlocke and Challenge Options
Later Heart & Soul releases expanded the customization menu. Version 1.2 introduced settings for:
- Nuzlocke
- Randomizer
- Special Challenges
🏟️ Battle Frontier Content
Heart & Soul version 1.2 also received the Battle Frontier from Emerald, together with improvements from Modern Emerald. This is useful for postgame fans.
Your adventure can continue after the main story instead of ending immediately after the Pokémon League and Red encounter.
⚠️ Know Which Heart & Soul Version You Have
This is important if you search for the game online. There are several related projects:
