Pokemon Battle Theater
About the Game
Pokémon Battle Theater is a Pokémon Emerald ROM hack focused on battle simulation rather than a traditional Pokémon adventure. The project uses the pokeemerald-expansion engine and lets you select trainers from across the main Pokémon games. You can watch two teams fight under AI control or take control of one side through Pilot Mode.
The project currently documents around 120 curated trainer rosters from different generations. The roster includes characters from Kanto through Paldea, Hisui, Pokémon Colosseum, Pokémon XD, and other Pokémon content.
🧑🏫 Trainers From Many Pokémon Eras
The roster is one of the strongest parts of the project. You can find teams associated with characters such as:
- Red
- Blue
- Silver
- Cynthia
- Steven
- Wally
- Lance
- Ash
- Paul
- Volo
- Nemona
- Legends: Arceus characters
- Pokémon Colosseum characters
- Pokémon XD characters
- Battle Frontier trainers
- Pokémon World Tournament trainers
The project also recreates the teams from the 2012 VGC World Finals for Wolfe Glick and Ray Rizzo. The documentation specifically notes their famous Trick Room versus Tailwind matchup.
You can therefore create matchups that would never occur in the original Pokémon games.
🎮 Pilot Mode Gives You Control
AI battles are not your only option. Pilot Mode lets you control one side yourself with a selected trainer's team. You do not need to catch or train the Pokémon first. The mode provides:
- A preset trainer's team
- Direct control during battle
- No normal grinding requirement
- Automatic badge support for obedience
- Suppressed experience gain
- Access to preset and custom teams
🏆 Tournament Mode Gives You a Bracket
Tournament Mode uses an 8-trainer single-elimination bracket. You can select:
- Singles
- Doubles
- VGC
- Best of 1
- Best of 3
- Random Spectate
- A trainer to follow
- A trainer to pilot
Best-of-3 tournaments can use adaptive team selection between games. The project also supports different tournament cups with region-specific trainer pools. This setup gives your battles a clear competitive structure.
🧠 VGC Mode Uses Specific Rules
VGC Mode is not simply a normal Doubles battle. The documented format uses:
- Doubles
- Level 50
- Bring 6, pick 4
The project also includes AI support for team-preview decisions.
That makes VGC Mode useful if you want battles that follow a more competitive tournament structure.
🛠️ Build Your Own Teams
Battle Theater contains an in-ROM custom trainer editor. For each Pokémon, you can configure details such as:
- Species
- Nickname
- Sprite
- Held item
- Ability
- EVs
- IVs
- Four moves
- Nature
- Gender
- Shiny status
📋 Pokémon Showdown Teams Can Enter the ROM
One particularly unusual feature is the Showdown team-code system. You can build a team in Pokémon Showdown, use the project's offline encoder, and enter the resulting short codes into the ROM. The system can transfer information such as:
- Species
- Held item
- Ability
- Moves
- EVs
- IVs
- Nature
- Gender
- Shiny status
- Trainer information
The encoder works offline through an HTML file. The project documentation states that it does not require an internet connection, link cable, or additional ROM patching for the import process. This is a strong feature for anyone who already builds competitive teams on Showdown.
🏟️ Battle Frontier Challenge
Battle Theater also gives the Battle Frontier a larger role. You can borrow a preset trainer's team and use it in Frontier facilities such as:
- Battle Tower
- Battle Dome
- Battle Palace
- Battle Arena
- Battle Factory
- Battle Pike
- Battle Pyramid
👻 Shadow Pokémon Connect the Game to Orre
The project also incorporates material from Pokémon Colosseum and Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness.
The Orre content includes Shadow moves and trainers from the two games. The documented roster contains characters such as:
- Miror B.
- Dakim
- Venus
- Ein
- Nascour
- Lovrina
- Snattle
- Gonzap
- Greevil
- Ardos
- Eldes
The Shadow move system follows the special mechanics associated with the Orre games.
This gives Battle Theater a connection to a part of Pokémon history that rarely appears in Game Boy Advance ROM hacks.
🐉 Shadow Lugia Gets Custom Treatment
The latest boss update gives XD001 its own Shadow Lugia presentation. The documented implementation includes:
- Purple body
- Silver armor plates
- Red eyes
- Front battle animation
- Back sprite
- Party icon
- Four Shadow moves
- XD001 name
- A custom Pokédex entry
Regular Lugia remains separate from XD001.
🎯 Some Trainers Use Pokémon Pools
Not every trainer has to use exactly the same six Pokémon every time. The project contains trainers with larger Pokémon pools. The AI can select a team from those pools for a particular battle.
The documentation gives examples such as Ash, Paul, Gary, and Battle Tree trainers.
This can make repeated battles against certain trainers less predictable.
📈 The Project Keeps Growing
Battle Theater has received frequent feature updates. The release history records major additions such as:
- Tournament mode
- Spectator mode
- Modern trainer rosters
- Orre content
- Shadow moves
- Elite Four Challenge
- Hall of Fame
- Custom Cup
- Classic Elite Four rosters
- Boss Battles
The latest documented release is v2.7.0, dated August 18, 2026.
For a ROM-hack listing, this version detail matters. Older gameplay videos can show features that differ from the current release.
