There are tons of puzzle-solving elements in the game that feature the present as well as past Mario. Do you think you can rescue princess Peach with all this time-traveling around you? There is only one way we can find out, so all the best to you!
โณ A Journey Across Two Eras
The story begins when Princess Peach tests a new time machine called the Time Holes. After traveling into the past, she fails to return. Mario, Luigi, and Princess Peach soon discover that an alien species known as the Shroobs has invaded the Mushroom Kingdom in the past.
To stop the invasion, Mario and Luigi travel through time and join forces with their younger selves, Baby Mario and Baby Luigi.
โญ Key Things You'll Encounter
- Time-travel storyline
- Four playable heroes
- Turn-based battles
- Puzzle-solving sections
- Nintendo DS dual-screen gameplay
- Bros. Items instead of Bros. Attacks
- Multiple locations from the Mushroom Kingdom's past
- Boss battles against the Shroobs
๐จโ๐ฆ Four Heroes, Four Buttons
One of the game's most recognizable mechanics is its control system.
Each character is assigned a separate button:
- Mario
- Luigi
- Baby Mario
- Baby Luigi
Outside of battle, you use these controls to solve puzzles and overcome obstacles. During combat, each character can attack, dodge, and perform special actions independently.
At first, the system may seem unusual. After a short time, it becomes one of the most rewarding parts of the experience.
๐พ Meet the Shroobs
The primary antagonists are the Shroobs, an alien race that invades the Mushroom Kingdom's past.
Unlike many enemies in Mario games, the Shroobs play a central role throughout the entire story. Their technology, armies, and leaders create many of the conflicts you encounter during the adventure.
The game has a darker tone than several other Mario titles because of this invasion storyline.
โ๏ธ Battles Require Timing
Combat follows a turn-based RPG format, but timing remains important.
You can:
- Jump on enemies
- Use hammers
- Dodge incoming attacks
- Perform Bros. Item combinations
- Counter enemy actions
Paying attention to attack patterns often matters more than simply leveling up.
