Sonic 2: Sweet Relief
About the Game
Sonic 2: Sweet Relief is a fan-made ROM hack of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for the Sega Master System and Game Gear. The hack was created by Flamewing to address one of the original game's biggest frustrations: boss fights without rings. Instead of changing the story or level themes, it keeps the original adventure intact while making the final act of each zone less punishing. A revised version released in 2011 also includes several gameplay improvements beyond the original release.
๐ Why Was This Hack Created?
In the original Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for the Master System, the third act of every zone contains the boss battle but no rings. If Sonic gets hit without rings, you immediately lose a life.
Sonic 2: Sweet Relief changes that design by placing rings throughout the third act of every zone. This gives you more opportunities to recover after taking damage and makes boss encounters more forgiving without changing the overall structure of the game.
โญ Documented Improvements
The latest version of Sonic 2: Sweet Relief includes several confirmed changes.
These improvements include:
- Rings appear during every Act 3 before boss battles.
- A three-digit ring counter replaces the original two-digit display.
- Collecting 100 rings no longer resets your ring count to zero.
- Ring bonuses continue to work correctly after reaching 100 rings.
- Checkpoint monitors are available throughout the game.
- Various bug fixes and gameplay refinements from earlier releases. :contentReference[oaicite:2]{index=2}
