Sonic 3 Unlocked
About the Game
Sonic 3 Unlocked is a classic-style side-scrolling platform game with Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy Rose, Mighty, Ray, and Metal Sonic. You can play through familiar zones, collect rings, use character-specific abilities, take on boss encounters, and explore Encore Mode.
๐ฎ What You Can Expect
Sonic 3 Unlocked keeps the core platforming structure associated with Sonic 3. You run through side-scrolling stages, jump across platforms, avoid hazards, defeat enemies, collect rings, and reach the end of each act.
The current version also provides several additional gameplay options:
- Seven playable characters
- Encore Mode
- Character-specific abilities
- Special Stage content
- Blue Sphere content
- Additional boss encounters
- New stage transitions
- Planned additional stages and unlockables
๐ฆ Choose Your Character
You can select from seven characters in the documented current build.
- Sonic โ Uses the familiar high-speed platforming abilities associated with the series.
- Tails โ Can use his flying ability to reach areas that Sonic cannot reach in the same way.
- Knuckles โ Uses his climbing and gliding abilities.
- Amy Rose โ Uses her hammer-based attacks.
- Mighty โ Has his characteristic defensive ability associated with his modern gameplay appearance.
- Ray โ Uses his aerial movement abilities, although his Air Glide was not complete in the documented 2026 build.
- Metal Sonic โ Is playable, but some normal-stage sprites remained incomplete in the documented build.
Character abilities affect how you approach sections of a stage. A route that works well for Sonic may require a different approach with another character.
๐ด Zones You Can Explore
The documented Encore Mode gameplay covers a large selection of Sonic 3 and Sonic 3 & Knuckles-era zones.
These include:
- Angel Island Zone
- Hydrocity Zone
- Marble Garden Zone
- Carnival Night Zone
- Flying Battery Zone
- Ice Cap Zone
- Launch Base Zone
- Mushroom Hill Zone
- Sandopolis Zone
- Lava Reef Zone
- Sky Sanctuary Zone
- Death Egg Zone
The stages retain their recognizable layouts and gameplay structure while the current build provides additional character and encounter options.
โญ Encore Mode
Encore Mode is one of the main features of Sonic 3 Unlocked.
This mode uses the expanded character selection and provides another way to experience the available stages. The documented 2026 build includes Encore Mode gameplay across many of the game's zones.
You can therefore replay familiar locations with characters that were not part of the original three-character selection.
๐ Special Stages and Blue Sphere
Special Stage content is also part of the current build.
Documented gameplay shows Special Stage sequences associated with characters such as Amy, Mighty, Ray, and Metal Sonic. The project also contains Blue Sphere content.
The Special Stage system is particularly notable because Sonic 3 Unlocked has extensive technical work behind its handling of the original game's sphere-based gameplay.
๐บ๏ธ Familiar Stages With New Gameplay Options
A major part of the experience comes from using different characters across familiar stages.
Your character choice can change how you approach:
- Vertical sections
- Gaps
- Platforms
- Enemy encounters
- Aerial routes
- Certain obstacles
- Boss situations
Sonic's movement focuses on speed and momentum. Tails has aerial mobility, while Knuckles can climb and glide. Amy, Mighty, Ray, and Metal Sonic provide additional ways to approach the available stages.
โ๏ธ Current Development State
Sonic 3 Unlocked is currently a work in progress.
This point matters if you plan to play the game. The documented builds contain incomplete elements and known issues.
Examples include:
- Ray's Air Glide was not complete in the documented 2026 gameplay build.
- Some Metal Sonic sprites were still missing in normal stages.
- A Marble Garden boss issue was documented when Tails was absent.
- A camera issue was reported in Carnival Night Act 2.
- Some planned features are not yet part of a finished release.
The project also lists future goals such as additional stages, unlockables, optional collectibles, quality-of-life improvements, and Museum Mode.
