Sonic Mushroom Blast – Legacy
About the Game
Sonic Mushroom Blast: Legacy is a Nintendo 64 ROM hack based on Super Mario 64. Blakeoramo created the project as an enhanced recreation of the original 2023 Sonic Mushroom Blast concept.
The project uses Sonic as the main character and changes several core systems from the original Mario game. Sonic has custom movement physics, rings, animations, models, HUD elements, and other Sonic-themed content.
๐ How the Legacy Project Started
The first Sonic Mushroom Blast concept appeared in 2023.
The original idea used the existing Super Mario 64 stages as the foundation for a Sonic conversion. Later development moved toward a much larger project with remixed stages and additional content.
Legacy exists to preserve that earlier direction.
๐จ Sonic's Physics Are Central to the Game
The biggest mechanical change is Sonic's movement.
The developer based the main physics on Sonic CD. Some additional movement ideas come from Sonic Adventure.
Your movement therefore differs from Mario's original controls.
Sonic has:
- Faster movement
- Sonic-style acceleration
- Momentum-based movement
- Air movement
- Sonic-specific animations
- Ring-based damage
- A Sonic Adventure-inspired air-control option
You can also press B to cancel air acceleration with the Sonic Adventure-style setup.
This system is one of the main reasons the conversion works as more than a character replacement.
๐ด Sonic R Enters the Mushroom Kingdom
One of the most unusual parts of Legacy is its Sonic R material.
The later release contains two Sonic R-inspired stages:
- Resort Island
- Radiant Emerald
These areas replace the original Wing Cap stages. They also use racing mechanics. You can race against Metal Sonic and collect Sonic R coins.
This is a notable departure from the Mario 64 structure.
The hack therefore draws from more than one Sonic game while still using Super Mario 64 as its primary foundation.
๐ Four Bonus Courses Hide in the Castle
The later Legacy release also contains four bonus courses:
- Chao Clamor
- A second Chao Clamor course
- Stardust Speedway
- Emerald Hill Zone
Emerald Hill Zone appears as a post-credits bonus course.
These areas give you additional Sonic references outside the main Mario 64 course structure.
๐จ Sonic Has Multiple Models
Legacy does not rely on one Sonic model throughout every section.
The documented project contains several versions, including:
- A model from the Aquatic Ruins Demo
- A model based on Sonic Jam, Sonic R and Saturn Sonic 3D Blast
- A recreation of the 2023 beta Mushroom Blast Sonic model
You can switch between the 2024 model and the recreated 2023 model by pressing D-Pad Down while standing still.
The Sonic R areas automatically use the Sonic Jam/Sonic R/Saturn Sonic 3D Blast-style model.
That choice suits the Sonic R references in those stages.
