Sonic The Next Level
About the Game
Run through the unfamiliar areas and use your skills to get ahead in this new adventure game called Sonic The Next Level. Features such as an anti-gravity bicycle level, exploding platforms, powerful air tubes, space levels and much more! Can you perform in space the same way you do on earth? Letโs play the game and find that out now!
Sonic The Next Level is a fan-made ROM hack of the original Sonic the Hedgehog for the Sega Genesis / Mega Drive. The project was created by MarkeyJester and released in 2015. Within the Sonic ROM hacking community, it is often referred to as Sonic 1: The Next Level. The hack received significant attention for its original artwork, custom gameplay mechanics, and polished presentation.
๐ช๏ธ A Single Zone With Three Unique Acts
Unlike many Sonic ROM hacks that modify existing levels, Sonic The Next Level contains a completely original zone called Gust Planet.
The adventure consists of:
- Gust Planet Act 1
- Gust Planet Act 2
- Gust Planet Act 3
Each act contains new layouts, custom obstacles, and original visual themes. The artwork was created specifically for this project rather than being copied from other Sonic games.
๐จ Original Graphics Throughout
One aspect that stands out immediately is the visual design.
The hack includes:
- Custom backgrounds
- New environmental artwork
- Unique stage themes
- Original visual effects
- Redesigned objects and scenery
Community reviews frequently praise the graphics because they push the Sega Genesis hardware in impressive ways while still retaining the classic Sonic style.
โ๏ธ New Mechanics Inside Gust Planet
Although the hack uses the Sonic the Hedgehog engine as its base, several gameplay ideas differ from the original 1991 game.
During your journey, you will encounter:
- Anti-gravity switches
- Air tube transportation systems
- Moving environmental hazards
- Custom platforming sequences
- Unique stage gimmicks
Gameplay footage also shows unusual anti-gravity sections that alter how Sonic moves through parts of the level.
๐ Spin Dash Returns
The original Sonic the Hedgehog did not include the Spin Dash move. Sonic The Next Level includes this ability, which first appeared in Sonic the Hedgehog 2.
You can use Spin Dash to:
- Build speed from a stationary position
- Cross slopes more efficiently
- Reach higher momentum quickly
This small change gives Sonic more mobility throughout the custom stages.
๐ค A Different Final Battle
The first two acts end with traditional Sonic signposts.
Act 3 takes a different approach.
At the end of the final act, Sonic faces a giant robot inside a zero-gravity environment. This encounter differs significantly from the boss battles found in the original Sonic the Hedgehog.
๐ต Music Choices You May Not Expect
The soundtrack became one of the most discussed aspects of the hack.
Instead of relying mainly on Sonic music, the project uses Sega Genesis conversions of various pop and dance tracks alongside a few game music selections. Community members often cite the soundtrack as one of the hack's most memorable features.
