Sonic And Knuckles & Sonic 2 is a special lock-on version of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 that becomes available when the Sonic & Knuckles cartridge is connected to Sonic the Hedgehog 2 on the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive. This feature was created by Sega as part of the Sonic & Knuckles lock-on technology. The combination allows you to play through the entire Sonic 2 adventure as Knuckles the Echidna, a character who was not available in the original 1992 release.
๐ What is Lock-On Technology?
Sonic & Knuckles included a cartridge slot on top of the game cartridge. Sega designed this feature to connect with certain other Genesis games.
When Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is attached to Sonic & Knuckles:
- A new game mode becomes available
- Knuckles becomes the playable character
- Sonic 2's stages remain intact
- Several routes change due to Knuckles' abilities
This mode is officially known as Knuckles in Sonic 2.
๐ฆ Sonic's Adventure Through Knuckles' Eyes
The story remains largely the same as the original Sonic the Hedgehog 2.
Dr. Robotnik continues his search for the Chaos Emeralds while constructing the Death Egg. Your goal is to stop him before his plans succeed.
The major difference is that you control Knuckles the Echidna throughout the entire adventure instead of Sonic.
๐ฅ Knuckles Has Different Abilities
Knuckles does not play exactly like Sonic.
His special abilities include:
- Wall climbing
- Gliding through the air
- Higher jumping control during glides
- Access to alternate routes
These abilities can completely change how certain stages are explored.
For example, some areas in:
- Emerald Hill Zone
- Mystic Cave Zone
- Hill Top Zone
- Chemical Plant Zone
contain routes that Sonic cannot easily access.

During my research of gameplay footage and community discussions, one point appeared repeatedly: many fans enjoy revisiting Sonic 2 because Knuckles changes the flow of exploration.
Several zones become easier due to his climbing ability, while some sections require different timing because Knuckles moves differently from Sonic.

Because of these differences, many stages play differently even though the level layouts remain largely unchanged.
๐ Chaos Emerald Quest
You can still collect all seven Chaos Emeralds through the Special Stages.
The Special Stage system remains the same as the original Sonic 2. You enter these stages by collecting enough Rings and reaching Star Posts throughout the adventure.
