Sonic Chaos: Tails In Special Stages
About the Game
Sonic Chaos: Tails In Special Stages is a Sonic Chaos ROM modification that centers on Tails gaining access to the Special Stage system that is restricted to Sonic in the original Game Gear and Master System game. The base game was developed by Aspect and published by Sega in 1993. It is known as Sonic & Tails in Japan.
๐ฆ Tails Gets Access to the Special Stage System
The biggest point of interest is Tails. In the original game, Tails cannot enter a Special Stage. Collecting 100 Rings with Tails gives you an extra life instead. Sonic, on the other hand, gets transported to a Special Stage when he reaches 100 Rings.
This restriction is unusual because Tails is fully playable throughout the main adventure. The ROM title Tails In Special Stages directly focuses on this part of the original design.
๐ Five Emerald Stages to Explore
The original Sonic Chaos has five Special Stages. Each stage contains one Chaos Emerald. The sixth Emerald comes from the main game after the final boss sequence.
Each Special Stage uses its own layout and movement idea.
You can encounter:
- Rocket Shoes flight sections
- Pogo Spring sections
- High-speed warp tubes
- Platforming routes
- Maze-style layouts
- Time Stop items
- Large Rings worth multiple Rings
The objective is simple. You need to locate the Emerald before the timer reaches zero.
๐ Tails' Flight Changes Main-Stage Movement
Tails has a movement ability that Sonic does not have.
You can make Tails fly by standing still, holding Up, and pressing Jump. His flight lasts for a limited period. You can control his movement with the directional buttons while he is airborne.
This is one of the main reasons Tails plays differently from Sonic.
You can use his flight to:
- Reach higher areas
- Cross some hazards
- Avoid certain ground obstacles
- Access elevated sections
๐ด Six Zones Make Up the Adventure
The main game contains six Zones, with three Acts in each Zone. The third Act contains a boss encounter.
The Zones are:
- Turquoise Hill Zone
- Gigalopolis Zone
- Sleeping Egg Zone
- Mecha Green Hill Zone
- Aqua Planet Zone
- Electric Egg Zone
๐ฏ Rings Have More Than One Purpose
Rings are important throughout the game.
You need them for protection from damage. They also contribute to your score at the end of an Act.
In the original game, collecting 100 Rings produces different results depending on your character. Sonic enters the next available Special Stage. Tails receives an extra life. That rule is the main distinction this ROM title focuses on.
๐ฅ A Different Kind of 8-Bit Sonic Adventure
Sonic Chaos has a compact level structure. The Zones are shorter than many larger Sonic adventures, but they use several different environmental mechanics. Strategy guides also point out that taking higher routes can often make progression easier.
