Mighty Morphin Power Rangers in Streets of Rage 2
About the Game
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers in Streets of Rage 2 is a Genesis ROM hack that converts Streets of Rage 2 into a Power Rangers-themed beat-'em-up with six Rangers, modified combat, new enemies, altered bosses, new music, and several movement changes. The project is credited to Vesta2023 and PPI_Akiko. The documented current version is 1.3. RomHack Plaza lists the hack as complete.
๐ฆธ Your Rangers and Their New Moves
Six Rangers are available as playable characters. The hack does more than replace the original characters with Power Rangers sprites. Each Ranger has a large selection of custom attacks. You can also use several movement and combat options that do not work exactly like the standard Streets of Rage 2 system. Some of the documented combat changes include:
- Running for longer distances
- Turning around during a run
- Longer jumps after running
- Offensive Specials during a run
- Shorter charge time for charge attacks
- Offensive Specials while holding an enemy
- Defensive Specials while holding an enemy
- Specials while grabbing an enemy from behind
- Dive kicks instead of the original jump kicks
- Air combos
- Knockdown recovery
- Directional dash attacks
These changes give you more ways to attack enemies instead of relying only on the standard punch-and-grab system.
โ๏ธ Combat Has a Different Rhythm
The original Streets of Rage 2 combat system remains the foundation. The ROM hack changes several parts of it.
Running is especially important. You can perform an Offensive Special by pressing A while running. The project also reduces the required charge time for charge attacks.
Grab attacks have received changes as well. You can use Specials while holding an enemy. The same option works when you grab an enemy from behind.
๐ Movement Gives You More Options
Movement is one of the strongest changes in this ROM hack. The normal forward-running command has been made more responsive. Running also supports longer jumps. Version 1.3 includes additional vertical dash inputs.
You can use:
- Up + Up for an upward dash
- Down + Down for a downward dash
The opposite directional combinations can also produce these movements.
This means you have more control over your position during combat and platform movement.
๐ Power Rangers Enemies Replace the Streets of Rage Gang
The conversion also changes the opposition.
The developers state that around 90% of the enemies and bosses have been replaced with Power Rangers-related characters. Enemy names were also changed in version 1.1.
This is important because the Power Rangers theme continues throughout the stages. You are not simply controlling a Ranger inside an otherwise unchanged Streets of Rage 2.
The enemies, bosses and visual presentation receive their own modifications.
๐ A Secret White Ranger
The hack includes a hidden playable character.
You can unlock the White Ranger by completing the game on Hardest or Mania difficulty. Once unlocked, the documented selection method requires you to highlight the Green Ranger and press A + C.
The White Ranger also received specific development work. Version 1.2 changed his moves and animations. The update also changed his special input behavior.
This gives you an extra reason to replay the campaign after completing it on a lower difficulty.
๐ฎ Difficulty Options and Stage Select
The hack keeps the familiar difficulty structure from Streets of Rage 2 and also provides Very Easy and Mania options. Stage Select is available too.
You can also select duplicate Rangers. This means your chosen characters do not have to be unique during multiplayer sessions.
Turbo Mode is another documented feature. Public documentation confirms its presence, but it does not provide enough technical information to describe its exact effect in detail.
๐ต Genesis Presentation With a Power Rangers Theme
The visual and audio work goes beyond character sprites. The project changes:
- Intro
- Title screen
- Ending
- Music
- Sound effects
- Character graphics
- Enemy graphics
- Boss graphics
- Text
๐ฅ Six-Button Controller Support
The hack supports the six-button Sega Genesis controller.
One documented change assigns the Back Attack to the Y button. This gives the modified combat system another input without removing the important controls from the original layout.
MSU-MD support is also documented through a separate package.
๐ง Version 1.3 Shows Continued Development
The version history gives you a useful picture of how the project evolved.
