About the Game
Pokemon R.O.W.E. is a Pokémon Emerald GBA ROM hack created by rioluwott with open-world progression as its main focus. You can explore Hoenn and the Sevii Islands with far fewer restrictions than in the original Emerald. Gym Leaders can be challenged in different orders, while level scaling helps keep battles suitable for your progress.
🌍 Hoenn Works Very Differently Here
The first thing you notice is the freedom of movement. You do not need to follow Emerald's normal Gym sequence. You can travel across Hoenn and choose which Gym to challenge next. Wild Pokémon and Trainer levels scale with your progress, which supports the open-world structure.
🏅 24 Badges Across Two Regions
R.O.W.E. expands the badge hunt beyond Hoenn. You can collect 24 badges in total:
- 16 Gym challenges across Hoenn and the Sevii Islands
- 8 additional Gym challenges on the Sevii Islands
- Gym battles can be completed in different orders
- Level scaling keeps the Gym teams aligned with your progress
The Sevii Islands serve as a substantial second area rather than a brief side visit.
🐉 Pokémon From Generation 1 to Generation 9
Your Pokédex has a much larger selection than the original Pokémon Emerald. The current feature documentation lists Pokémon from Generation 1 through Generation 9. You can also encounter various regional forms and newer species during your journey.
This has a direct effect on team building. You can search for Pokémon that were never available in the original Hoenn adventure and create teams around your preferred types or strategies.
⚔️ Modern Battle Mechanics
R.O.W.E. updates the Emerald battle system with mechanics from later Pokémon generations. Important systems include:
- Mega Evolution
- Physical/Special move distinction
- Signature moves
- Modern abilities
- Generation 9 Pokémon
- Generation 9 moves
- Gen 6-style EXP Share
- Updated evolution methods
🧭 Travel Without the Old HM Burden
Traditional HM management is much easier here.
R.O.W.E. uses field tools and ride-style systems for exploration. You can use options such as:
- Eon Flute
- Rapid Transit System
- Flying Taxi
- Faster Surfing
- Field abilities
You therefore have more freedom when building your team because you do not need to keep several HM moves in your regular movesets.
🥚 Team Building Takes Less Grinding
R.O.W.E. has several systems that reduce the amount of preparation normally required for competitive-style team building. You can use:
- Egg Move Tutors
- Nature Mints
- Infinite TMs
- IV Checker
- Move Reminder
- Move Deleter
- EV-related tools
- Pokémon tracking through DexNav
The purpose is simple. You can spend more time using your chosen team instead of repeatedly breeding for basic requirements.
🎲 Choose How You Want to Play
R.O.W.E. has several optional game modes. Depending on the version, you can use modes such as:
- Randomizer
- Permanent Double Battles
- Scalemon
- Reverse Type Chart
- No EVs
- Perfect IV settings
- Random Party
These modes can change the rules of a playthrough considerably. The experimental branch is also testing a Random Leader Type Mode, which can give the Gym Leaders randomized types for a new run.
🎚️ Pick Your Difficulty
You can choose between three main difficulty levels:
- Easy
- Normal
- Hard
Each setting uses different level-cap rules. Easy Mode is closer to the standard Emerald experience, while higher settings provide more restrictions and stronger progression rules. Community reports show that the difficulty can vary by mode and by the team you choose.
🏡 Following Pokémon and Alpha Encounters
R.O.W.E. also contains several systems that make exploration more varied. You can have Pokémon follow you outside battle. Alpha Pokémon can also appear as special encounters after you obtain the Mega Bracelet. These encounters work as stronger battles, and you can catch the Alpha Pokémon after defeating it.
🔄 Internal Wonder Trade
The game contains its own Wonder Trade system. This means you can trade Pokémon inside the game without depending on the original Nintendo online services. That system also gives you another way to create unusual teams or run challenge formats.
🏆 Achievements and Trainer Skills
Your progress is not limited to badges. R.O.W.E. contains an Achievement System with objectives and rewards. It also has a Trainer Skills system based on the O-Powers from Pokémon X and Y. Trainer Skills can provide benefits related to areas such as:
- Catching Pokémon
- Shop prices
- EXP gain
- General utility
These systems give you additional goals during a long playthrough.
👕 Customize Your Trainer
You can also change your character's appearance. The game provides different outfits and RGB color customization. This gives your character a more personal appearance than the original Emerald protagonist.
🎵 Change the Music
R.O.W.E. also provides a regional music selection. You can choose music from:
- Kanto
- Johto
- Hoenn
- Sinnoh
📖 What About the Story?
R.O.W.E. is not primarily a story-focused ROM hack.
The game keeps much of the Pokémon Emerald world and its characters, but the open-world design changes the role of the original storyline. Community reviews note that many story events are optional or less important than they were in vanilla Emerald. Your main progression centers on:
- Gym challenges
- Exploration
- Team building
- The Elite Four
- Optional activities
- Sevii Islands content
- Post-game objectives
So, if you mainly want a new Pokémon story, another ROM hack may suit you better. R.O.W.E. is much more focused on freedom and replayability.
