Pokemon Johto Legends
About the Game
Pokémon Johto Legends is a Game Boy Color ROM hack of Pokémon Crystal created by Ferropexola. The story takes place 15 years before Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal. You play as Draco or Dahlia and investigate a Pokémon-poaching mystery across Johto. The project keeps the classic GBC presentation but changes many of the original mechanics with later-generation features. Current development information lists the game at around 400 Pokémon, with Kanto and the Sevii Islands available in the later 0.8.x builds.
🕰️ A Story Set Before Pokémon Crystal
The story takes place 15 years before the events of the original Generation 2 games. You can choose between Draco and Dahlia as your main character. Your journey revolves around a mystery involving people who are kidnapping and poaching Pokémon across Johto. The plot uses the earlier time period to give familiar locations and characters a different context.
This is not simply a new Pokémon roster placed inside Crystal. The prequel concept gives you a separate storyline while keeping Johto as the central setting.
🕵️ Your Journey Starts With a Pokémon Mystery
The Pokémon-poaching storyline forms a major part of the adventure. As you travel through Johto, you encounter new events and characters connected to the investigation. The story also uses references to the original Generation 2 games, which gives the prequel setting more meaning.
Recent community feedback has been especially positive about the narrative. One player who reviewed the game in 2025 described it as a very story-driven ROM hack and praised its connection to the original Johto games.
🐉 Your Starter Choice Is Different
You do not begin with Chikorita, Cyndaquil, or Totodile. Your initial choices are:
- Dratini
- Larvitar
🗺️ Familiar Johto With a New Adventure
The game's world retains the recognizable Johto foundation of Pokémon Crystal. You can visit familiar cities, routes, and landmarks, but the events around those locations are different. New NPC interactions and story sequences give the region a different purpose.
Recent community feedback also praises the number of NPC events throughout the adventure. One 2026 review specifically highlighted the amount of character interaction and environmental storytelling.
🌏 The Adventure Goes Beyond Johto
The later versions of Pokémon Johto Legends are much larger than the early releases. Current 0.8.x information lists:
- Johto
- Kanto
- Sevii Islands
The Sevii Islands also contain post-game content in the newer builds. This means the current version should not be judged by older 2022 descriptions that only discuss the early Johto campaign.
🧬 Around 400 Pokémon to Discover
The Pokédex has grown considerably during development. Early versions contained a much smaller selection. Current development information lists approximately 400 Pokémon, with Pokémon from several generations represented. The roster includes:
- Pokémon from earlier generations
- Later-generation evolutions
- Regional forms
- Newer Pokémon
- Selected modern evolution methods
🎛️ You Can Choose Your Battle Style
One useful feature is the availability of different gameplay versions. The documented options include:
- Original
- Faithful
- No PSS
- Challenge
📊 EVs and DVs Get Better Visibility
The game also changes how you view your Pokémon's statistics. The Pokémon status screen can show DVs and EVs, which gives you much more information than the original Crystal interface. A recent player review specifically praised this feature.
The game also includes ways to train EVs and lower unwanted EVs. This gives you more control over competitive-style team preparation without leaving the GBC framework.
🍓 Berries and Items Work Differently
The game also modernizes several item systems. You get a separate berry pouch, and berry trees can provide multiple berries. Smashing rocks can produce items and even fossils for later revival. The item system also contains newer battle items such as:
- Choice Band
- Life Orb
- Other modern competitive items
These changes give you more options when preparing your team.
