About the Game

Pokémon GS Chronicles is a Game Boy Advance game based on Pokémon FireRed. The project takes inspiration from Pokémon Gold, Silver, Crystal and HeartGold/SoulSilver, but it is not a direct remake of any of those games. The developer describes it as a reboot with a different storyline, scripts and additional original ideas.

The game focuses on a redesigned Johto adventure with updated mechanics, new events, HGSS-inspired maps, Mega Evolution, a day-and-night system, expanded Pokémon availability and additional locations.

🗺️ A New Take on Johto

The story takes place primarily in Johto, but the region does not simply copy the original Game Boy Color games.

The project uses:

Maps based on Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver.
New locations in Johto.
Additional locations in Kanto.
New puzzles.
Modified routes and areas.
New story events.
Updated graphics and environments.

The developer has also stated that the Kanto section is being designed with more exploration options instead of simply copying the original Kanto routes and dungeons.

📖 The Story Is Not a Straight HGSS Remake

The basic premise uses familiar elements from the Johto games, but the storyline contains original material.

At the beginning:

Professor Elm is researching mysterious stones.
Ethan/Kris and the player are involved in his research.
The player receives a Pokémon.
You are sent to deliver a package to Mr. Pokémon.
A mysterious red-haired character steals a Pokémon from the laboratory.
Professor Oak provides the Pokédex.
Your journey through Johto follows the events surrounding the stolen Pokémon and the identity of the red-haired character.

The developer specifically describes GS Chronicles as a reboot rather than a conventional remake. The story mixes concepts from Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold and the developer's own ideas.

🌙 Time Changes the Pokémon You Find

GS Chronicles has a day-and-night system.

Time affects:

Wild Pokémon encounters.
Certain events.
Some aspects of exploration.
Which Pokémon appear in particular areas.

This means you can encounter different Pokémon depending on the time at which you visit an area.

🐾 Expanded Pokémon Selection

The game expands the Pokémon available in the original FireRed base.

The documented regional Pokédex includes:

Pokémon from Generations 1–4.
Sylveon.
Regional variants.
Fossil Pokémon.
A total regional Pokédex of 494 Pokémon is documented for the project.

The game's official feature documentation also states that the standard game includes Pokémon from Generations 1–6 in some versions of the feature list, while the randomizer can use Generation 7 content. Because the available documentation has changed across builds, the safest description for the Beta 2.7.6 release is the documented 494-Pokémon regional Pokédex rather than claiming that every Gen 1–7 Pokémon is normally obtainable.

💥 Mega Evolution

Mega Evolution is implemented in GS Chronicles.

You can:

Use Mega Evolution during battles.
Obtain Mega Stones.
Encounter Mega Evolution as part of the game's storyline.
Search for Mega Stones throughout the adventure.

The official project website also has a dedicated video covering all Mega Stone locations, which confirms that Mega Stones are distributed throughout the game.

⚔️ Updated Battle Mechanics

GS Chronicles changes several battle mechanics from the original FireRed system.

The project includes:

Physical/Special move split.
Updated type chart.
New moves from later Pokémon generations.
Trainer teams adjusted for the expanded Pokédex.
Battle mechanics inspired by later Pokémon generations.
Mega Evolution.
In-battle trainer messages.

The physical/special split is particularly important because the original Pokémon FireRed uses the older type-based physical/special system.

🧚 Fairy Type Is Included

The original FireRed games were released before the Fairy type existed.

GS Chronicles updates the type system.

You get:

Fairy-type Pokémon.
Fairy-type moves.
An updated type chart.

This changes the effectiveness of several moves and Pokémon compared with the original FireRed battle system.

🏄 PokéRides Replace Traditional HM Use

GS Chronicles introduces PokéRides.

They replace the traditional overworld use of HMs.

The project documentation specifically describes PokéRides as items that replace the outdated HM mechanics.

This means you do not have to structure your Pokémon team around carrying multiple HM moves simply to progress through the overworld.

🎒 Quality-of-Life Improvements

Several systems receive changes compared with FireRed.

Documented features include:

Exp. Share functionality.
Updated Trainer Card.
EV/IV checking features.
Move Tutors in Pokémon Centers.
Move Deleters in Pokémon Centers.
DexNav for detecting wild encounters.
Updated Pokémon cries.
Updated PokéGear.
Daily Wonder Trade.
Improved graphics.

The exact availability of some systems can depend on the specific beta version.

🔎 DexNav Helps Find Wild Pokémon

The game includes the DexNav system.

Its documented purpose is to help you detect wild Pokémon encounters.

This is another feature that does not exist in the original Pokémon FireRed.

🎁 Daily Wonder Trade

GS Chronicles also includes a daily Wonder Trade system.

The documented feature allows you to perform Wonder Trades with Pokémon supplied by in-game trainers.

This gives you an additional way to obtain Pokémon outside normal wild encounters.

🏋️ Move Tutors at Pokémon Centers

Move Tutor and Move Deleter services are available through Pokémon Centers.

According to the documented feature list:

Move Tutors can be found at Pokémon Centers.
Move Deleters can also be found there.

This makes experimenting with movesets easier than in the original FireRed.

🧩 New Puzzles

The Johto adventure contains puzzles that are not present in the original games.

The project specifically mentions puzzles inspired by the Ruins of Alph and additional puzzles in other areas.

These puzzles form part of the additional exploration content.

🏙️ Updated Johto Locations

The game uses an HGSS-inspired visual direction while retaining the technical foundation of FireRed.

You can see:

HGSS-based world maps.
Updated city graphics.
New locations.
Modified routes.
New environmental graphics.
Updated battle backgrounds.
Redesigned interface elements.

Goldenrod City, for example, received graphical changes in Beta 2.7.6.

👊 Stronger and Updated Trainers

Trainer teams are not simply copied from the original Johto games.

The project documentation states that many trainers use different Pokémon rosters to match the expanded Pokédex.

This affects:

Gym battles.
Regular Trainer battles.
Elite Four battles.
Rival encounters.

The game also contains Gym Leader rematches and additional post-League battles.

🏆 Pokémon League and Title Defense

The Beta 2.7.6 release contains a substantial completed Johto progression.

According to the documented release information, you can:

Earn all 8 Johto badges.
Challenge the Pokémon League.
Rematch Johto Gym Leaders.
Participate in Elite Four rematches.
Take part in title-defense battles after completing the required League progression.

Beta 2.7.6 also introduced a Shiny Charm reward connected to repeated Elite Four rematches and a title-defense battle.

✨ Shiny Hunting

The Shiny Charm is available in Beta 2.7.6 under the documented requirements.

The changelog states that you receive it after:

Winning the Elite Four rematches at least twice.
Completing the title-defense battle.

The item is then given in Goldenrod City.

🥊 Multiplayer Battles

Beta 2.7.6 restored multiplayer battle compatibility.

The documented procedure is:

Go to the second floor of a Pokémon Center.
Use the multiplayer facility.
Compatible emulators include mGBA, MultiGBA S and MyBoy according to the release documentation.

The changelog notes one limitation: multiplayer battles do not currently have a battle background.

🎵 HeartGold/SoulSilver Music

The game uses music from Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver.

The project originally used lower-quality music but later incorporated its own higher-quality rips of the HGSS soundtrack.

The music therefore gives the GBA adventure a soundscape associated with the Nintendo DS Johto games.

🖼️ Updated Visual Presentation

GS Chronicles makes substantial visual changes to the FireRed foundation.

Documented improvements include:

HGSS-inspired maps.
Updated battle backgrounds.
Updated Bag graphics.
Improved Trainer Card.
Updated Pokémon cries.
New environmental graphics.
Redesigned locations.

Gameplay footage also shows the project's redesigned Johto environments and interface.

🧑‍🤝‍🧑 Characters and Rivals

The story uses familiar Johto characters but changes their roles and relationships.

You can select:

Ethan
Kris

The project also has a gender counterpart who serves as another rival, in addition to the red-haired rival character. The developer has confirmed that the gender counterpart is another rival.

🌎 What About Kanto?

Kanto is confirmed as part of the project's plans, but this point needs careful wording.

The project is not simply a completed Johto-and-Kanto adventure.

The developer stated that Kanto was confirmed and under development, with the intention of creating new exploration rather than copying the original Kanto experience.

Therefore, for the currently documented Beta 2.7.6 version, you should describe Johto as the completed main region and Kanto as in development, rather than advertising the game as a fully completed Johto + Kanto adventure.

🛠️ Beta Status Is Important

Despite some websites calling GS Chronicles "complete," the project's own information shows that development is still ongoing.

The official download page lists:

Beta 2.7.6
Release date: June 19, 2024
Johto content completed.
Kanto still in development.

RetroAchievements also identifies the supported ROM as Pokémon FireRed – Pokémon GS Chronicles (Beta 2.7.6).

This is the version information I recommend using on Y9FreeGames.

🐛 Known Bugs and Fixes

GS Chronicles has gone through several rounds of bug fixes.

Beta 2.7.6 fixed:

Goldenrod Tower 2F soft-lock problems.
Incorrect text.
Incorrect title behavior at Violet City Gym.
Leftover FireRed text in some locations.

Earlier versions also had issues such as:

TM Case crashes.
Incorrect wild encounters.
Rocket Hideout crashes.
Random crashes associated with some audio configurations.

A community review from an earlier period also described the hack as buggy, which shows that stability was a recurring concern during development. However, those reports refer to older builds and should not automatically be applied to Beta 2.7.6.
