HSV Adventure Racing
About the Game
HSV Adventure Racing is an arcade racing game for the Nintendo 64 that was released exclusively in Australia in 1999. Developed by Paradigm Entertainment with EA Canada and published by Electronic Arts, it is the Australian version of Beetle Adventure Racing! Instead of Volkswagen New Beetles, you drive Holden Special Vehicles (HSV) VT performance cars across imaginative race tracks filled with shortcuts and hidden routes.
The track design encourages exploration as much as racing. Many hidden paths remain easy to miss during your first race, which gives every course excellent replay value.
๐ More Than a Traditional Racing Game
Most racing games focus on reaching the finish line as quickly as possible. HSV Adventure Racing takes a different approach. Each course contains:
- Hidden shortcuts
- Secret tunnels
- Off-road routes
- Nitro pickups
- Bonus crates
- Collectible HSV pendants
Searching for these secrets often helps you finish ahead of your rivals.
๐ Australian HSV Performance Cars
Unlike the international release, this version replaces the Volkswagen New Beetle with Holden Special Vehicles VT models. The gameplay remains almost identical to Beetle Adventure Racing!, but the vehicle models and several regional details were changed specifically for Australian players.
๐ Tracks Full of Hidden Routes
Every race track offers much more than the main road. You can discover:
- Mountain roads
- Forest trails
- River crossings
- Underground caves
- Snow-covered sections
- Desert paths
- Large jumps
- Secret passages
Several shortcuts remain hidden until you spend time exploring each location.
๐ฎ Arcade Racing With Simple Controls
HSV Adventure Racing uses accessible driving mechanics. Your main objective is to:
- Finish ahead of AI racers
- Collect Nitro boosts
- Find shortcuts
- Unlock additional championships
- Learn every track layout
Vehicle handling remains easy to understand, while the track design provides plenty to master.
๐ Championship Progress
Winning races unlocks more content. As you progress, you gain access to:
- New race tracks
- Higher championship levels
- Additional vehicle choices
- Harder opponents
Each championship increases the difficulty while encouraging you to improve your racing lines and shortcut knowledge.
๐ฅ Local Multiplayer
The Nintendo 64 version supports up to four people on one console. Available multiplayer options include:
- Split-screen races
- Battle mode
- Flag collection events
- Competitive multiplayer matches
Local multiplayer remains one of the game's strongest features, especially for retro gaming sessions.
๐จ Detailed Environments
Even years after its release, the environments remain one of the game's biggest highlights. You will race through:
- Green forests
- Snowy mountains
- Desert landscapes
- Rivers
- Bridges
- Rural roads
- Open countryside
The courses include numerous elevation changes and alternate paths that reward careful exploration.
๐ Music and Sound
The soundtrack uses energetic electronic music that matches the arcade racing style. Audio highlights include:
