Pokemon Forbidden Memories
About the Game
Pokémon Pokémon Forbidden Memories is a Pokémon Emerald ROM hack that recreates the story and world of Yu-Gi-Oh! Forbidden Memories inside the Game Boy Advance engine. The project comes from Fenix Imortal and changes the Emerald setting, characters, maps, progression, and monster roster to match the Yu-Gi-Oh! source material. The current publicly documented build is version 0.9.3, with the main story playable from start to finish while further balancing and polish remain planned for version 1.0.
🏺 A Pokémon Engine With a Forbidden Memories Story
The basic concept is simple. You get the exploration and RPG foundation of Pokémon Emerald. The story and world come from Yu-Gi-Oh! Forbidden Memories. The developer has redesigned:
- Maps
- Characters
- Story progression
- Monster roster
- Visual presentation
- Battle scenery
- Game environments
🃏 Your Monsters Are From Yu-Gi-Oh!
The usual Pokémon roster does not form the center of your adventure. Instead, you encounter Yu-Gi-Oh! monsters. The current project has 202 monster/card entries, according to recent project coverage.
The monster selection includes familiar creatures from the Yu-Gi-Oh! universe. You can build your team around these monsters and use Pokémon-style battle mechanics to develop them.
⚔️ Battles Follow Pokémon Rules
This is an important point before you start. Pokémon Forbidden Memories is not a direct remake of the PlayStation card game.
You do not use the original Forbidden Memories fusion-and-card battle system as the main combat format. Instead, the Emerald battle engine provides the foundation. Your monsters have Pokémon-style levels, HP, moves, experience, and other RPG statistics.
🧬 Evolution Is Part of the Adventure
The developers have confirmed that evolution lines are included. This is an unusual adaptation because traditional Yu-Gi-Oh! card games do not use Pokémon-style evolution as their core progression system.
Here, selected Yu-Gi-Oh! monsters can develop through an evolution structure that fits the Emerald engine. Community discussion directly confirms the presence of evolution lines. So your collection is not simply a list of static monsters. You can also work toward stronger forms during the adventure.
🌍 Ancient Egypt Is Your First Major Setting
The world design follows Forbidden Memories rather than Pokémon Emerald. Ancient Egypt forms an important part of the early adventure. The maps have been redesigned so the environment matches the source game's setting instead of using the original Hoenn geography.
This gives you a very different experience from a normal Emerald ROM hack. You will not see the usual Hoenn route structure as the main identity of the game.
🏙️ Domino City Has a Major Role
Domino City is another important location in the adventure. The current version contains story progression in the city and encounters with characters connected to the original Forbidden Memories storyline. Community discussion specifically mentions progression through the game up to the encounter with Mai and later sections around Domino City.
🔄 Grinding Options Are Limited in Some Areas
The original Forbidden Memories had its own grinding methods, including Free Duel. The ROM hack does not currently have a direct equivalent that covers every area. Players have specifically requested:
- More repeat battles
- A VS Seeker-style item
- Better grinding opportunities in Domino City
- More convenient healing locations
The developer has acknowledged the request for a future rematch system. If your team falls behind in levels, you may need to spend more time looking for available battles.
🏥 Healing Can Require Backtracking
Community feedback also points to healing access as an issue in the Egypt section. One player described finding the nearest healing location as difficult and complained about the amount of backtracking required. This is worth knowing before you start a longer section. Keep your team prepared before you move far away from a healing point.
🎒 Pokémon-Style Items Still Exist
Because the project uses the Pokémon Emerald engine, familiar Pokémon-style items remain part of the gameplay. Community documentation and available item information mention resources such as:
- Rare Candy
- Great Ball
- Fire Stone
- Water Stone
- Thunder Stone
- Moon Stone
These items fit the Pokémon RPG framework even though the creatures themselves come from Yu-Gi-Oh!.
🧠 Your Familiar Pokémon Knowledge Can Still Help
If you have played Pokémon Emerald or other GBA Pokémon games, the controls and basic RPG structure will be familiar. You already understand concepts such as:
- HP
- Levels
- Experience
- Moves
- Evolution
- Items
- Party management
- Trainer battles
The main learning curve comes from the Yu-Gi-Oh! monster roster. You need to learn what each monster does and understand its role in your team.
🎨 Version 0.9.3 Gets a Visual Upgrade
The 0.9.3 update focuses strongly on presentation. The update includes:
- Improved sprites throughout the game
- New battle scenery
- New environments
- Better visual presentation
- A closer visual connection to Yu-Gi-Oh! Forbidden Memories
⚔️ Battle Environments Match the New Theme
Standard Pokémon Emerald battles normally use familiar Hoenn-style scenery. Pokémon Forbidden Memories uses new battle environments that fit its Yu-Gi-Oh!-based setting.
The 0.9.3 update specifically includes new battle scenery and environments. This makes the crossover more consistent across exploration and combat.
🗺️ The Maps Are Not Simply Hoenn With New Names
One of the strongest parts of the project is the map conversion. The developer states that the maps were redesigned around the Forbidden Memories story.
That means your knowledge of the original Pokémon Emerald map will not help much with finding locations. A community member has even suggested that an in-game map would be useful.
🧪 The Game Is Still Being Balanced
The current build should be viewed as a work in progress. The developer is still working on:
- EXP rates
- Trainer levels
- Battle difficulty
- Progression
- Grinding options
- General polish
The stated goal is to make progression smoother while keeping the connection to the original Forbidden Memories experience. This is why your experience with version 0.9.3 may differ from future releases.
